Online somatic movement and vocal workshop to explore the structures that support authentic expression
Embodied Voice
Thursday, 4th June
7-9pm on Zoom
Language is structural
When sounds, syllables and words intonate and combine to bridge misunderstanding they create a coherent field of connection between seemingly seperate bodies, which then has the potential to (literally) deconstruct and reconstruct realities.
The interconnected ‘field’ these sounds and tones arise from exists regardless ~ but the quality of what is heard depends largely on the state of the landscape the sound must pass through;
The dense, physical bodies of land, yes ~ but also the landscapes & spaces contained within the bodies of cell, fluid and tissue they are expressed through.
The ‘field’ of resonance these sounds travel through has everything to do with how they are received, heard, understood and remembered, and whether or not the soil in which their bija (seed) sounds get planted is receptive or non-receptive to the connectivity they are trying to create.
Even though the ‘body’ is dense, stagnation cannot co-exist with the vibration of sound and a voice’s authentic expression, because the very nature of sound & vibration is change & variability.
When we connect with voice through language, song and mantra, something innate gets remembered and starts to re-organise itself around a coherent centre, a holding field; the aspect of our awareness that has not changed since we first came into form.
This happens whether or not we are conscious of it. Rigid patterns soften and dissolve away from tightly held ideals and expectations, & a new capacity for deep listening and responsibility (response-ability) comes online.
The whole-body practice of wielding voice and sound responsibly is what the yogis and tantrikas knew had the potential to create dramatic shifts in our experience and perception of reality.
Re-organising how we relate to the landscapes we are living in (both bodily and earthen landscapes) requires that we enter into practice with a readiness to dissolve whatever structures are keeping us from experiencing the freedom (of expression, of movement), that we so desire.
This applies to all practice oriented to the non-dual lens, but for this workshop we will use the voice, language and body as focal points.
Leaning on somatic resourcing tools, vocal exercises, mantra and non-dual tantric philosophy, we’ll explore the following questions:
What happens to voice and language when the structure and field of resonance it’s spoken in, changes?
What happens in the vocal cords & respiratory systems of a people when a language declines or is systematically oppressed?
Where and how does this show up in the body, the somatic landscape through which those voices and languages are expressed?
And how can somatic practice and non-dual teachings help us relate to the body of earth we live on, as well as our own bodies and voices, in ways that allow for more thorough expression and embodiment of the intricately alive, multitude of sensory experiences and sounds available to us in each moment?
"It's astonishing how much we take our voice out of our body. As soon as you bring your voice back down onto the ground - the breath in the body, the body on the ground - the whole thing is rooted and connected. It's almost like lightening being grounded. There is a willingness to hear the low roar in your own body that you so often turn away from."
-David Whyte

This is a 2-hour Online Embodied Voice Practice
Where we begin at our densest layer - the body, through guided somatic movement and engagement of outer structures, gradually we’ll make our way towards more subtle inquiry, breath and vocal practice, before culminating in mantra-chanting.
